Tiago Guedes returns to Dennis Kelly, the British playwright with whom he was once happy in his vertiginous descent into the hells of human complexity. After Orphans, the director and stage manager now tackles The Ritual Killing of Gorge Mastromas, a 2013 text about the banality of evil in the person of the man that Kelly’s play scrutinizes in retrospect: “Existence is not what you thought it was until now. It’s not honest, it’s not kind, it’s not fair. Most of the world has no idea about that, they believe in God, or in Daddy or in Marx or in the invisible hand of the market or in honesty or kindness. They go through life, with their eyes closed, getting beaten up and screwed over. That’s who he is. You’re like that. But a tiny part of us, let’s call it the resistance, know the true nature of life. We are given the world. We are powerful and rich and we have everything, because we will do whatever it takes.”
