1. OTTO was founded in July 2012, by myself and Ricardo Braun, as a space – centered on, but not limited to, the theatrical performance – for experimentation, production and affirmation of the gesture of the word, when spoken and when written, and of the need to fix the performative object through a regular project of publishing new texts, new translations, new dramaturgies and complementary documentation to the performances. In September 2012, we presented Katzelmacher in Porto, based on the play and film of the same name by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, because we wanted to start our work by rediscovering a certain forgotten German-language literary and theatrical heritage. Perspicere is our second creation.
2. We bring you this work created to be presented in hotel rooms and which began to be designed in 2011, when I decided to read the diaries I had written since 2004 during my tours. On first reading, it was quite clear how difficult it was to be away from home. It wasn’t about homesickness or the difficulty of adapting to the rhythm of a life constantly on the move, but something more physical than that. The fact that my body perceived the hotel room as an extension of the stage – I later discovered that this was also due to the fact that it is a space that doesn’t allow for continuity – meant that I was in permanent action, producing an internal discourse that contained in its gesture – more than a break with the space I was in – a necessary adjustment to that same space. The hotel room as a place of excellence for voyeurism, but for autophagic voyeurism.
3. Organization is needed. We need to rethink the models, instead of trying to make the installed models survive. We’ve spent too long covering rotten wood with gilded wood. Things need to resonate. We need conditions and rights so that we can carry out our work continuously and consistently. We need more opportunities and fewer outstretched hands. We need to stop blaming others. We need to realize once and for all that this profession is not a status, a hat, a way of being or an attitude. It is a job. With the rights and duties that entails. We need to not let whims prostitute ideas. But above all, ideas are needed.
