Sophocles’ oldest and most cryptic tragedy recounts the actions and fate of Ajax, the great Greek hero and companion of Achilles. After Achilles’ death, Ajax rebels because the Weapons of Achilles were given to Ulysses and not to him. His pride blinds him, leading him to repudiate men and gods and creating the space for his own tragedy.
In the context of a contemporary staging, this play develops above all on this theme, the titanic struggle that exists in today’s society, not hyper-conscious but hyper-informed, to control the narrative of facts and therefore write reality. Ajax is the tragedy of someone who still wants to control the meaning of his own hubris, in this sense it is a post-tragedy for a post-conscious world.
